Obituary: Elisabeth Elliot

Tim Thornborough | June 17, 2015

Elisabeth Elliot, missionary, and wife of the martyr Jim Elliot, died on Monday 15th June, aged 88.

After the death of Jim and four of his companions at the hands of the Huaorani—an unreached people group in the Ecuadorian jungle—Elisabeth stayed on with her 10-month old daughter and continued the work of outreach to the very people that had murdered her husband. She returned to the US in 1963, and had a fruitful life of writing and speaking. Her courage, witness and books were an inspiration to many people.

If you have not read the story of this couple and the extraordinary life and witness of Elisabeth and Jim Elliot, can we recommend the following:

  • Through the gates of splendour was written by Elisabeth Elliot and tells the story of how her husband Jim was killed by the tribe of Amazonian Indians he went to share the gospel with, and how Elisabeth ended up living with them for 2 years after his death, with many of them turning to Christ.
  • He is no fool tells the story of the Elliots for children, as part of the Torch Bearers series.

"He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose." Jim Elliot
