The World Bank publishes a list of the countries with the 10 highest average household salaries. Few of the names are surprising, and the United States tops the group.

But the USA also tops another list. When 14 countries from across the world were tested by the World Health Organisation, America reported the highest percentage of mental health issues.

It’s not just that wealth fails to bring lasting fulfilment. In fact, there seems to be an inverse relationship between the two. The more wealth we have, the more we become aware of what we still lack.

During her battle with alcohol and substance addiction, Amy Winehouse said, “I do suffer from depression, I suppose. Which isn't that unusual. You know, a lot of people do.” Depression has become the norm, and no amount of money can fix it.

And if material prosperity can’t bring us happiness and lasting fulfilment, what can?
