A unique storybook Bible: faithful to the biblical text, beautifully illustrated, and teaching young children the big picture of how God’s promises are fulfilled in Jesus.
Christian parents, rejoice! God’s Big Promises faithfully tells the big story of the Bible with theological and pastoral care, offering both parent and child a clear and vivid view of the most important storyline ever crafted. Here is the truest and most beautiful story, both simple and profound, a priceless treasure to be passed from one generation to the next.
This has everything I am looking for in a kids Bible: vivid and colourful artwork, well-told stories, ethnically diverse illustrations, faithfulness to Scripture, and a clear sense of how God’s promises hold history together. A go-to Bible for the next generation of children.
Laferton presents God's Word to children in a unique way with this storybook Bible.
I love how he outlined this presentation by seeing the "bigger picture" of Scripture, and the repetitive themes we see. I greatly appreciate how he illuminates what some of God's promises are, and how we have seen Him fulfill them in Jesus. As a child, I often heard "the promises of God," but didn't fully understand what that meant, so this is a tangible way to explore that!
I also appreciated that this storybook Bible was presented chronologically, which is another useful and unique approach.
I did find some of the wording to be rather interpretive, which some readers may disagree with. Some of the illustrations were also a little intense for the young crowd that this is geared towards.
Other than that, I appreciated the approach and pray that it opens doors for many families to have conversations about the Word of God!
Thank you to The Good Book Company for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
One of the notable features of this Bible Storybook is its versatility. It can be approached in two ways: readers can dive into the stories in order, or they can follow a structured reading plan called the "promise path." This path guides readers through stories that highlight God's significant promises, such as the promise of rescue, joy, among others. This flexible approach caters to various learning styles and allows children to engage with the Bible in a manner that suits their preferences.
Carl Laferton, who is also the author of best-selling books like The Garden, the Curtain, and the Cross, and The God Contest, has successfully crafted a beginner-level Bible storybook that can be revisited repeatedly. Through these theologically sound stories, Laferton weaves together the overarching narrative of the Bible: God's relentless commitment to fulfilling His promises and redeeming His people. This approach provides a solid foundation for young readers, helping them grasp the interconnectedness of the Bible's stories and how they ultimately point to Christ and His fulfillment of these promises.
God's Big Promises Bible Storybook is an invaluable resource for parents, teachers, and anyone eager to introduce children to the profound truths of the Bible. Carl Laferton's adept storytelling and Jennifer Davison's vibrant illustrations combine to create a theologically rich and engaging book that will leave a lasting impact on young minds. This book masterfully conveys the Bible as one grand, true story, highlighting the promised-shaped narratives that ultimately find their fulfillment in Christ. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to every family seeking to nurture a deeper understanding of the Bible's enduring message in their children.
This book and one’s like it are so important!! They help to convey the big picture ideas of the Bible through the stories, and how we can follow God’s faithfulness across many different story arcs.
I am often disappointed with children’s Bibles, because they cut out important components of the history in the Bible that teaches important lessons from God. A children’s Bible that only focuses on the story events themselves misses the reason why we have those stories…Romans 15:4 NLT “ “Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled.”
I’m thankful for a Bible that seeks to follow promises and big ideas through the story and I hope there are more to come!
This is a captivatingly illustrated book, and the story telling style is very welcoming. The Living Word Himself never gets old, but sometimes illustrated Bible Story books do. I was happy to add this one to our rotation to keep our kids’ passion alive!
We love giving away Bible storybooks to families who come to baptise their children at our Anglican Church, and this is a new favourite! It’s a great retelling of both popular stories and some more unknown stories, giving a great variety of bits of the Bible to learn together as a family. The illustrations are beautiful and really make this book excellent. Our favourite bit though is the inclusion of “promise paths”, giving a series of stories to read together to learn about things like God’s plan of rescue, his provision of a king, and even one big Bible story overview in 20 stories. We’d really recommend it!
I purchased this book because I thoroughly enjoyed his earlier work, "The Garden, the Curtain, and the Cross." I had been somewhat disappointed with previous children's Bibles, but this one has truly impressed me. It effectively conveys the core message of the stories, which is of utmost significance.

The bright illustrations, simple language, and themes of promise make this a great storybook to read aloud to young children!
Faithfully accurate and wonderfully illustrated. Jesus is displayed throughout scripture and the beautiful main point of scripture is pointed to. My 4 year instantly gravitated towards it which opened doors for sweet conversations.
Ideal for younger children, this book takes 92 stories from the Bible and presents them in an enjoyable, fun way, easily understandable, sensitively presented (some of the stories in the Bible can be a challenge to explain to younger children) with carefully considered vocabulary.
The book includes many of the Old Testament favourites, as well as about half the book covering the New Testament. It links the two in a creative way, highlighting those stories that include a promise from God (especially in the OT), matching them to a later story that shows God delivering to that promise (often in the NT). This could really help to deepen a child’s understanding of the way the Bible narrative works over its thousands of years, and how Jesus delivers many of the promises of God.
The stories are true to the Bible, conveying the core messages of each story. They will lead to plenty of questions and opportunity for further explanation between child and reader, or further thought if the child is reading alone. I can see this one working so well as a daily bedtime read.
It is packed with illustrations from Jennifer Davison which add hugely to each story, colourful and engaging, with one on every page.
