It was no coincidence that Abbey was writing Held when we lost our second baby. The portions of it that she shared with me were a balm to my aching heart. This is a Word-saturated book, tenderly written by a woman who loves Jesus, trusts him, and wants to see many hurting moms do the same. I highly recommend it to you.

God always tells the best stories—for adults and for kids. Whatever our age, we need to hear Jesus say again and again, "Take away the stone." Lauren Chandler helped to bring this precious story alive for me in new ways as I saw it through my daughter’s eyes. This book is a sweet gift to parents—for our children and for our own souls.

In this world, there are way too many goodbyes. Our grief over sickness, sorrow, pain, and death is right, good... and, in Christ, temporary—because Christ has died, Christ has risen, and Christ will come again! These truths cannot be drilled into the human heart too early in life. That’s why I’m so grateful Lauren has written this lovely, hopeful, child-accessible representation of Jesus calling his friend Lazarus up from death. Parents, read this book to your kids over and over again... so that when it comes time for them (and you) to say goodbye, they (and you) will know it is only temporary.

As a parent, and as one who has had to say my share of goodbyes, I understand the difficulty of explaining death to children in a way that validates their sadness but also offers hope in the midst of their sorrow. This book is a beautifully helpful reminder that, even though it feels like it, death doesn’t have to be a forever goodbye, because Jesus came to end goodbyes.

This is the devotional I wish someone had given to my husband when we went through our miscarriage. It’s so good. So needed. So important. So tender. Eric named so many unnamed things.

Eric knows firsthand the confusion, questions, pain, and emotions that can be associated with miscarriage. This is the only book I have ever seen that is written for the father of a miscarried child. And it’s a great one. Dig in, allow God to meet you in the pages of this book, and you will find healing and comfort. And share it with every dad you know.

Dave and Ann Wilson Co-hosts, Family Life Today

Miscarriage affects couples, not just mothers. Men convince themselves that they need to be the strong ones and muscle on unaffected. Not so. Eric’s tour of Luke’s Gospel draws out pastoral applications which show real men how to grieve, care, love, grow, and understand following the tragedy of a miscarriage. There’s nothing else like this book for men.

Eric Schumacher combines deep biblical insights with raw personal stories to help men tackle the difficult questions that arise in the aftermath of miscarriage. Ultimately, he directs them toward their heavenly Father who alone can comfort and restore. I’m grateful to have this resource to pass along to the many men who have travelled the hard path of miscarriage. They don’t have to walk it alone.

Imagine if, upon learning of your experience with miscarriage, a wise pastor who had suffered similar grief committed to devoting an entire month to caring for you, opening the word of God with you, and helping your tired mind apply it to your burning questions, doubts, and shame. Imagine him giving you prompts and space to help you process and voice your struggle. That’s what Eric has done in this deeply pastoral, unwaveringly biblical, mercifully candid, and incredibly insightful devotional.

It is a number of years since my wife and I lost a child through miscarriage, and yet I still found Eric’s book deeply comforting. In this particular and peculiar grief we need to see Jesus Christ in all his close compassion, costly love and kind sovereignty; and it is to Christ that Eric takes us daily. I unreservedly recommend this book.

John Hindley Pastor of BroadGrace Church, Norfolk; author of Serving Without Sinking

A profound, helpful book for men walking through great loss. I would recommend it not just to men who are grieving a miscarriage but to anyone who wants to be a better friend for them—and indeed, to anyone who wants to be more of a friend of Jesus.

When we had our miscarriage we were crushed and confused. We did not know how to grieve, or even if we should grieve. I wish I’d had Ours at that time.

Ed Stetzer Executive Director, The Billy Graham Center, Wheaton College, Illinois

I am so grateful that Eric has seen the lack of resources for men walking through loss and felt called to meet the need. He does not minimize the difficulties, nor does he offer flat platitudes. This book is tender and kind, true and real.

The book that you hold in your hands is a precious gift from a brother who knows what it’s like to be thrilled with conception and then crushed by miscarriage. While women are generally familiar with walking through loss from miscarriage, the heartache of the father is rarely, if ever, acknowledged. Which is why this book is so precious—such a gift. Eric not only acknowledges the loss you’re feeling, he’s walked through it himself and has found Christ faithful even here. I heartily recommend it!

If you are a grieving father, or a pastor who has the privilege to journey with others after a miscarriage, this devotional will help answer your most pressing questions and shepherd you through questions you may not even knew you needed to ask! Rooted in personal pain and biblical truth, Ours will point you to the God of comfort who promises hope in the midst of grief. We highly recommend this resource for the church!

In this book, Eric comes alongside the grieving with a voice that is as theologically astute as it is tender. When I experienced my first miscarriage, there were so few resources that I could turn to for comfort and guidance—outside of the Bible. Those resources were non-existent for my husband. These brief devotionals are a balm to my grieving heart, even years later. It's a book I wish my husband had when we experienced our losses, and a book I am so grateful to be able to press into the hands of others.

Jasmine Holmes Author of Mother to Son: Letters to a Black Boy on Identity and Hope

Eric Schumacher talks about his experience of miscarriage, the pain and grief it caused, and why the gospel of Jesus still gives him consolation and hope. I do not wish anyone would need a book like this, but I do not doubt that many men will find it helpful during times of confusion, grief, and despair when tragedy strikes.

Dr. Michael F. Bird Lecturer in Theology, Ridley College, Melbourne, Australia

I experienced this book as a master class for this as well as every other kind of grief. Scripture speaks of how those who have received comfort from Christ in their own sorrows are then able to bring comfort to others in theirs. Ours is a shining example of that reality.

Scott Sauls Senior pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tennessee and author of Befriend and From Weakness to Strength

When dealing with the great pain of miscarriage, few think to address the confusion and suffering of the man involved. But his grief and struggle is real as well, and he also needs the balm of the gospel. Thankfully this book fills that gap with gentle, honest, wise and gracious words in this time of great need. I pray God might use this to bring comfort and courage to many.

5.00 stars The best book on miscarriage that I've ever read!

(Review written for 'Held')

This book is the most amazing book about the sorrow of miscarriage! I have lost 3 precious babies over the years and I can only say that I wish I had this book when I was walking through those trials. While it has been 3 years since my last miscarriage, I can tell you that I cried many times while reading this and I've never felt so understood. Abbey does an amazing job of addressing the topic with compassion and kindness while pointing grieving mothers to the truth of scripture! If you or someone you know has gone through a ...

5.00 stars A Rare Book on an Important Topic

(Review written for 'Ours')

In the last couple of years, I've been seeking out books about pastoral care subjects for my work with men in my church. This topic, looking at miscarriage, was one of the least covered and most difficult to find something that was both biblical and gospel-centred, whilst also being caring and pastorally sensitive. In "Ours", Schumacher carefully shows us the God who cares and the God who hears, guiding us towards the biblical comfort that we so need. His short chapters/devotionals/reflections are just the right size for dipping into the topic carefully, allowing time to process this information on such ...
