Description

Jesus calls Christians to live for him, but it’s hard! A tangle of distracting thoughts and painful emotions can trip us up and stop us from being the people we long to be.

Christian neuropsychologist Jo Johnson pairs biblical insight with the tools of psychology to offer a freeing way forward. Through her positive, practical, down-to-earth perspective, you will…

  • better understand your inner life
  • learn to manage your thoughts, memories, desires, and emotions
  • combat overthinking and gain emotional resilience
  • take charge of your behavior by applying psychological tools and techniques
  • be encouraged to look to Jesus and rely on the help of the Spirit every day.

Driven by the desire to become more like Christ, this book takes your inner struggles seriously while offering the hope of the gospel.

You will be encouraged to throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, fixing your eyes on Jesus as you run the race (Hebrews 12:1)!

Each chapter concludes with action steps and prompts to worship.

Scripture is clear that to faithfully live the Christian life is to do battle with our thoughts—from the apostle Paul’s injunction in Romans to renew the mind to his word to the Corinthians about taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. In Disentangled, Jo Johnson skillfully weaves together biblical truth and her expertise in neuropsychology to provide believers with a roadmap toward both spiritual maturity and genuine inner peace. With clarity and compassion, she shows how the gospel not only frees us from sin but also equips us to steward our inner life—our patterns of thinking, our emotional responses, and our daily habits—in ways that honor God. This book is a needed resource for those who long to live in the freedom Christ has already secured and to walk with greater confidence, resilience, and joy in Him.

Canon J. John

Speaker + Author

This welcome book blends sound biblical truth and solid psychology to tackle those problems of troublesome emotions and unhelpful thoughts. Clear and practical, this is a book to be read, re-read and acted on.

Chris Cipollone

Author of Down, Not Out

Our personal thoughts and feelings hold more currency today than perhaps at any other time in history. While these internal narratives form an important part of the way God made us, Jo Johnson helpfully and expertly shows us that there is more to this story. She exhorts us to remember the truths of Scripture and of who we are in Christ rather than reverting to quick, automatic conclusions about ourselves and others. This book deftly and carefully brings together the best of what we know of psychological theory with the unchanging truths of God’s word—equipping every follower of Jesus with an opportunity to pursue a path of increased consciousness, measure and ultimately Christ-likeness.

“A warm, encouraging, helpful book”

I thoroughly enjoyed Disentangled; what a warm, encouraging, helpful book to start the New Year with. Jo's writing is clear and biblical, and her advice is both deeply practical and also full of grace. I am already using her techniques (I'm particularly loving STOMP) in my daily life, and will definitely be recommending them to friends at church. I'm looking forward to re-reading the book more slowly and intentionally, making full use of her helpful reflective sections at the end of each chapter, and how this might grow me in godliness in 2026!

I received a copy of this book from TGBC in exchange for an honest review.

“Perfect Blend of Faith and Science behind our feelings and emotions”

I've always argued that the scariest place for me personally is in between my two ears. Our thoughts can take us to some dark places, spouting lies as truth, and hold us back from the freedom we have in Christ. I have read many books on thoughts/emotions, and how to navigate both the physical realities within a Christian context.

Disentangled by Jo Johnson is a straightforward, easy-to-digest exploration of how our thoughts and feelings affect both our spiritual and mental health. I was under the impression this book would be more clinical; however, while it does include statistics and case studies, the overall focus is more spiritual. Nbad thing — just letting anyone else know who is looking for ce that perhaps is more scientific, with a sprinkling of faith — this book is more faith with a sprinkling of science.

I actually read this book cover to cover one afternoon in about 2 hours (which Johnson suggests is essential to read straight through, not skipping around or bypassing specific chapters), and it was that engaging. I love how each chapter ends wth "Pause in God's Mirror," which pushes the reader into personal reflection and response.

I recommend this book for young adults, perfect for small groups, and highly beneficial for someone struggling to navigate how their feelings work within the context of faith
