Explore the Life of Jesus invites readers to explore Jesus’ life, ministry, and victory over death. Devotions begin with a context to prepare the reader to dive into an incident in Jesus’ life. Readers are encouraged to revisit the passage to notice key details. Questions challenge the reader to think through spiritual concepts and respond to God. Written prayers provide examples of approaching God with respect, praise, and expectation of his answers. Adult literacy ministries would find Explore the Life of Jesus an effective way to disciple believers with low reading ability or to introduce the Savior to new readers who have never heard the good news.

These devotionals do exactly what they say on the tin! They are plain and simple, yet not dull or simplistic. These devotions are biblical and accessible, and I wholeheartedly recommend them to you. They fill a great need in the church for those who would love to know more about the Lord but maybe struggle with heavy reading.

Chrisā€˜s daily devotions do indeed explore the book of Jonah in a plain and simple format—they are wonderful! For those of us who find reading long, complicated books a challenge, these devotions are perfect. With a consistent structure that simply gets to the heart of the Bible passage, these reflections are laid out in an easy-to-read, clear format. They are truly accessible to all, and I would highly recommend them.

“Sovereignty and Sin”

Explore the Life of Jesus is a plain and simple devotional written by Chris Dalton. The 30 very short Bible reflections are easy to read, concise, and accessible. This book looks at 7–8 passages from each Gospel to give a big-picture view of Jesus.

The New International Reader’s Version (NIrV) of the Bible is used—a simpler and shorter version of the NIV. Each devotion is about two pages long and includes things to notice, questions to think about, and words to pray.

Sovereignty and Sin

I was most moved to reflect on whether I ever feel that evil is winning in the world, and whether I worry that some things might be more powerful than God. Remembering the stories of Jesus casting out evil spirits is a powerful reminder of our all-powerful God.

The book presents theological concepts in a straightforward way. At the cross, I was struck by how the crown of thorns reminds us of the thorns and thistles that first appeared when God cursed the ground in response to Adam and Eve’s sin. Sin is the reason Jesus went to the cross.

This book is perfect for children and youth who want to begin the habit of daily devotions. It also works well for adults who find reading to be a challenge. Explore the Life of Jesus will help open eyes, hearts, and minds to God’s Word.

I received a media copy of Explore the Life of Jesus and this is my honest review. @diveindigdeep

“Great new series! Plain and simple without being shallow or fluffy.”

I’m very excited about this new ā€œPlain and Simple Devotionsā€ series from The Good Book Company. They are just that - plain and simple - without being shallow or fluffy. It’s great for kids and teens and those new to the faith. It would also be good for family devotions with kids or those just looking for a simple devotion. This book includes the Bible verses which is helpful to take with you or use on the go.

This devotional focuses on the life of Jesus, drawing the reader into a deeper understanding of who He is and what He’s done. This helps build such a vital foundation to any Christian’s life - young or old.

I love this excerpt from the author’s bio on the website: ā€œpassionate about making gospel truth clear, using everyday language and ideasā€. Honestly, that’s exactly what this book does. This reminds me of faith like a child. We don’t need to know and understand all the nuances of Hebrew and Greek, all the complexities of doctrine. The gospel is plain and simple for those who believe.

This book starts with introduction and why to read this book. It also gives a brief overview of the 4 gospels and the context for how this book is written, using passages from each of the gospels to look at the life of Jesus from different angles.

This devotional has a two page spread for each of the 30 days with various ways to engage with the Scripture. There are also pages at the end to jot down your own thoughts and prayers.

The only small negative I can think of is that the Scripture is NIrV and I’d prefer it to be ESV or CSB. I understand NIrV is probably used because it’s ā€œeasier to readā€ but it can be oversimplified. Layout wise, there’s no space to write answers to the questions in that section. You’d need to use the blank pages throughout the book. Very minor, but I’d have preferred if they allowed space within the question section.

I received a complimentary copy as a reviewer and all opinions shared are my own.

“Simple Devotions that Point to Jesus”

Sometimes, you just need a very simple set of devotions that take you to a simple, biblical truth and help you to apply it. These notes by Chris Dalton take away anything too unnecessary and help you to focus on the Bible passage for the day, questions that unlock some of its meaning for us, and space to pray too. We're looking at these as options for our youth group gifts, as they're great ways to help those who are a bit nervous about Bible reading to get started! This edition, focused on Jesus, will take them through Jesus' life and help them to see how his claim to be God truly is life-changing.

“Great Intro Devo”

A wonderfully simple new devotional from Chris Dalton.

The book is structured with thirty days of devotionals. Each day follows a similar format:

- Scripture Reference

- What's Going On: quick summary of main points

- Some Things to Notice: a quick note on a part of the scripture that may not be easy to grasp

- More Info: additional cultural or other insights to help understand the scripture

- Some Questions to Think About

- Some Words to Pray

Each day is extremely short and very simple. You will get out of it what you put into it. You can fly through it to check it off a list or you can be intentional with your time and truly dig deep to gain a better understanding of scripture and Christ.

Dalton covers the true story of Jesus by discussing eight passages from all the Gospels. As he notes in his introduction: "We will get a bigger picture of who Jesus is by seeing His life from different angles." That is the goal of this devotional.

Although the simplicity of the devotional was not my style, it can serve as a great introduction for someone who is new to devotionals. It is not overwhelming or intimidating all while capturing the Christ.

I received a copy of this book from The Good Book Company in exchange for an honest review.
