“Disorganized and Unhelpful”

(Review written for 'John 1 – 12 For You')

After reading Timothy Keller's books on Galatians and Romans in this series, I was excited to try Josh Moody's 2-volume set on John. I wish I hadn't. I didn't even get through the first volume before giving up in frustration. It is very poorly organized, poorly written, overly "preachy" and unhelpful. The book apparently was not reviewed by an editor at all, which I thought was a standard part of the publishing process. This embarrassing set should be removed from the series and replaced by something intelligible and thoughtful, as Dr. Keller's books are. I'm not sure I will feel confident enough to buy any more books in this series, after trying this.

I’m sorry you felt that the volumes on John were of a lesser standard than those on Galatians and Romans (which I agree are exceptional). Of course, all the authors in this series approach their work with different emphases and styles, and I’m always struck by the number of people who tell me that completely different volumes are their particular personal favourite. I do hope you’ll find other titles in the series are more helpful and encouraging to you.
