There's another rainbow I regularly see in the Good Book Company offices. And it's not welcome!
As we are an über-cool organisation, we work on Apple Macs - the Ferraris of the computing world.
Mac users are known for being loyal evangelists of the brand, but at the risk of being branded a hardware heretic by the Mac-zealots , there are times when I could happily throw mine out of the window. There are times when, inexplicably, it just seizes up, and instead of a wristwatch ticking round, or a progress bar creeping across the screen, you get what is colloquially known as "The spinning wheel of death".
When this little sucker shows up on screen, things have got out of control, and the only solution is to force quit, pull the plug, or go out for a brisk walk and give it an hour or two to work things out.
What I hate most about this beachball is that it is made up of rainbow colours. It's bright happiness seem to say "life is fine and things are only going to get better," when it means exactly the opposite.
To Christians, the rainbow is the symbol of hope. Apple's spinning wheel tells you that death is inevitable. It's an attempt to (literally) put a positive spin on a disastrous situation.
Praise God that the real rainbow is not about spin. It is about the reality of God's merciful grace to sinners who deserve to crash, but who have been rescued by the love of God.
