There’s nothing like a little Spurgeon this Christmas season to rejuvenate your soul and convict your entire being. And Medders wonderfully gives bite size yet deep eternal truths in this 25-day Christmas devotional. Each day averages about 3 pages of reading with a reflection and prayer, so you can easily add this to your everyday reading without running out of time.
As Medders says: “Spurgeon is a soul-edifying read because his sermons overflow with the sweet aroma of Jesus Christ.” And soul-edifying they are! Medders has gone through Spurgeon’s sermons and expertly chosen some of his finest work concerning Christmas. ...These daily insights will help you set your mind on the things above before you busy about your day.
If we don’t sit and meditate on Christ and what he has done for us, we will get lost in the humdrum of Christmas. Don’t let this happen. Sit with Spurgeon for 5 minutes a day and be reminded of Christ’s humility, his love, his grace.

This is the perfect way to get ready for Christmas. Amidst all the prep, we need to prepare our hearts. I see Spurgeon's style as meditative - he helps us to meditate on a point by chewing over it so that we can really pause to take it in.
You might find yourself wanting to read it aloud to your family. I'll leave that up to you!
What better way to start your December days than to meditate on the glories of Christ?

The Newborn King is a lovely Advent devotional that helps put my heart and mind in the right place for Christmas. Each reading brought me back to the reason for the season: Christ humbled himself to come and save us. The devotions reflect on his birth, but they also remind us why he came and of the sacrifice he would make. As I read, I found myself wanting to love him more and share that love and joy with others.
I appreciate Spurgeon’s rich doctrine, and I enjoyed learning how J. A. Medders gathered these readings from his sermons. Each devotion is typically three to four pages, with a place to pause and think about God’s Word and a short suggested prayer. I also appreciated the Scripture throughout, the inclusion of the Nicene Creed, and the appendix that points readers to the original sermons.
I can see this working as a personal devotion or as a family reading with older children. I recommend having a copy ready for December 1 and taking that time each day to keep Christ in your thoughts throughout the Christmas season. What a beautiful reminder to love him and enjoy him forever.
I received a complimentary copy from The Good Book Company. All thoughts are my own.
