I received The Risen King compliments of The Good Book Company in exchange for my honest review.
The Risen King is an Easter devotional featuring collected works of the late preacher Charles Spurgeon and edited by J.A. Medders. This book is similar in style to Spurgeon's Morning and Evening devotional as it pulls material from Spurgeon's sermons. Spurgeon is one of my favorite saints of the past, so I am thankful that this book gave me more opportunities to read ...from him.
Each devotional begins with a Bible verse and concludes with two section, Reflect, and Pray. The reflect section contains questions to consider and the pray section provides a prayer based on the devotional content. The content is Christ centered and deeply encouraging. There's a sweetness in considering what was occurring in the world when Spurgeon wrote and in recalling that the same God who sustained Him is sustaining me now, too. The Risen King has easily become one of my favorite Easter devotionals and it's one I look forward to reading each year. I'm eagerly anticipating its companion book, The Newborn King, releasing in 2026.

What a wonderful Easter devotional. I read this aloud to my family during the weeks leading up to Easter. We all enjoyed. I’ve personally always enjoyed Spurgeon’s sermons. I would have to say my only critique is that the language was a little too modern/updated. It didn’t really sound like Spurgeon although it will still great substance.

This is an awesome little book! I read it during Lent, but it could easily (and should) be read at any time of year. The message of Easter is not just for a weekend. Each devotion is just a couple pages and includes a short reflection paragraph and short prayer.
I found this book to be super encouraging and convicting at the same time, bringing to light new facets of familiar stories and reminding me truths of who Jesus is ...and what he has done for me, the depth of his love.
Medders did a great job of finding things in Spurgeon's sermons and creating a wonderful journey to the cross of Christ.
Would highly recommend!
