Description

This seven-session Bible study by Timothy Keller on Romans 1 – 7 will help you to understand one of the most read, most written-about parts of the Bible.

Explore righteousness (why we don’t have it, why we need it, and how we can receive it) and be thrilled as you read that "the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23). It's a truth which will liberate every aspect of your life.

Each session will draw you to look closely at the Bible text and apply it meaningfully to your everyday life. The guide includes questions that open up discussion, optional personal reflections, and a concise Leader’s Guide.

Flexible and easy to use, Good Book Guides are perfect for both groups and individuals.

  • Written by a trusted Bible teacher
  • Covers the first half of Romans in seven sessions
  • Thoughtful questions that get to the heart of the text and apply it meaningfully to your life
  • Discussion prompts
  • Leader’s Guide with insights on every question
  • Optional extra sections if you have more time, including prayer prompts and icebreaker ideas

There is an accompanying commentary, Romans 1-7 For You, available for those wanting an even more in-depth study or for those teaching the Bible to others.

“The Good Book Guides are a fantastic resource for small-groups and personal study. I've used many of them myself. For a busy small-group leader, or a Christian looking for refreshment in his or her devotional life, these come so highly recommended.” - Sam Allberry, Pastor and Author

“Each guide in this series provides a framework for your group to dig into the text of Scripture for itself while providing enough of a steer to keep you on track plus useful pointers towards application. The result is a great combination of fidelity to Scripture and ease of use.” - Tim Chester, Crosslands Training; Author

I love this small group study guide series from The Good Book Company. Christians are regularly told they should spend more time studying God’s Word, but sometimes there’s not a clear plan for how to do this. These study guides provide practical, step-by-step guidance on working through books of the Bible, along with wonderful questions that encourage reflection and application. I hope churches and Christian ministries will take advantage of this wonderful resource.

The aim of the The Good Book Company is to be biblical, relevant and accessible, and nothing embodies that ethos more than their Good Book Guides. Each guide provides a framework for your group to dig into the text of Scripture for itself while providing enough of a steer to keep you on track plus useful pointers towards application. The result is a great combination of fidelity to Scripture and ease of use.

The Good Book Guides are an immensely precious resource for the church. A careful blend of helpful context and clearly-worded, searching questions which aim to help readers to uncover the meaning of the text and  apply it in responsible ways. I think these small group studies are the best available and pray that they will continue to prove helpful to local churches across the world!

“Clear and concise. Solid guide for individual or group settings.”

This is a verse-by-verse study on the first half of the book of Romans. Each of the 7 sessions has the following format as well as a dictionary for some of the key words.

Talkabout: ice breaker for groups or getting your thoughts going if doing alone
Investigate: explore the passage
Apply: practical questions
Explore more: go deeper
Getting Personal: personal reflection
Pray: prayer

There’s a leader’s guide in the second half of the book to facilitate group discussions. There’s also a map at the beginning as well as some context for why to study Romans.

This is a clear and concise study guide. It offers very little commentary or context, but can be used as a companion to the commentary “Romans 1-7 for You”. I do appreciate the separation of these as I can tend to focus more easily on the commentary than the actual verses when they are together. This study allows me to wrestle with Scripture on my own before immediately turning to a commentary. I think this approach helps me to actually learn better than reading the verses with the commentary before approaching the questions.

I enjoy the simplicity to the study guide with how each session is laid out. It can easily be done on its own for individual study, but is also set up to be great for groups. The leader’s guide in the back equips even the most inexperienced leader to do well. These are targeted for adults, but I am even thinking about using them in our homeschooling in our preteen/teen years with the kids.

I received a complimentary copy as a reviewer and all opinions shared are my own.

“Tried and tested format, with a trusted guide in Tim Keller.”

(Review written for 'Romans 1-7: The gift of God')

Just finished this Good Book study guide with a small home-group. We felt it was a helpful guide into this important and, at times, difficult book.

Have used a number of these studies in the past, so would definitely recommend them as a trustworthy resource. The investigate-explore-apply-pray model is a tried and trusted one. It purposely gives you more than you need, which allows you to tailor each chapter to the needs of the group. That does mean that the poor leader has a reasonable amount of ground to cover in advance, but the group will benefit from their investment in preparation and their facilitation skills.

I also bought Tim Keller’s accompanying book, which provides additional helpful context and supporting arguments, though the key elements of the book are actually summarised well in the Leader’s notes.

There were a few mutterings along the way that some of the questions were a bit hard to understand, but a peek at the Leader’s notes usually brings the needed clarity.

Given the weighty nature of Romans, each of the studies covers some challenging territory, so group members doing their ‘homework’ in advance pays dividends to the quality of discussion and fellowship. We took 90 minutes over each session (including time for prayer at the end), and found it a bit of a squeeze, given the need to give sufficient time to discuss the difficult bits sufficiently, to ensure that no-one was left behind in Paul’s exposition of the key truths of justification by faith, God’s wrath, propitiation and being united with Christ (to name a few).

The only niggle I had with Tim Keller was the side-stepping of baptism in chapter six. I presume that reflected his presbyterian heritage but, if you can forgive him that, he remains an excellent guide to unlocking these first seven chapters of Romans and enjoying the “gift of God” that comes form being in a right relationship with a holy God.

“Excellent Resource for Studying Romans”

(Review written for 'Romans 1-7: The gift of God')

This guide, written by Tim Keller, helps me to dig deeply into the book of Romans. It can be used individually or with a group. The questions are thought-provoking and guide to deep understanding. Plus, it provides Keller’s answers as a resource in the back of the book. This is part 1 for Romans. I strongly recommend buying both part 1 and part 2 right away.

“Good for upper elementary and teens”

(Review written for 'Romans 1-7: The gift of God')

We used it in our upper elementary Sunday school class....I think the materials is dense enough to use for teens, but you can also dial it back for upper elementary kids. I like the content and how the questions are asked in the work book along with leaders guide at the back... I'm recommend it to those who emphasize biblical teaching in their small group.

“Great Study!”

(Review written for 'Romans 1-7: The gift of God (ebook)')

This study on Romans written by Tim Keller is an outstanding resource to better understand this important book. The questions are engaging and help leaners understand the text. The leaders guide in the back is one of the best in the series. Keller does a great job of explaining difficult aspects of the book in a way that is accessible to most. I would highly recommend working through this volume for a small group or personal study of Romans.

“A good overview of Romans”

(Review written for 'Romans 1-7: The gift of God')

Romans 1-7 in 7 studies - wow! Tim does a really good job of giving the main points of Paul's wonderful epistle whilst not getting bogged down in the nitty gritty of theological argument. Enough background is given for the "man-in-the-pew" to appreciate the points Paul is making but maintains the broad thrust of the book. I have really enjoyed this so far but it is best read with the companion book "Romans1-7 for you" which amplifies points and gives more useful examples.
