Your church's sermons often include a call to evangelize. You've held evangelism training events. You give out invites to your Christmas and Easter services. So⌠where are all the new Christians? Is your church actually reaching the lost with the gospel?
For many of us, despite having the best intentions our churches struggle to reach out with the gospel effectively. J.A. Medders and Dr. Doug Logan, Jr. have decades of experience in leading churches and mentoring pastors, and here they outline six principles for cultivating a genuine evangelistic culture throughout your church.
Includes case studies from a variety of different cultures and contexts to give you practical ideas for implementing ...these six principles.
There are also free resources available, including a podcast series, that will help church leaders to implement the principles they learn in the book.
Foreword from Paul Tripp.
(Review written for 'The Soul-Winning Church (ebook)')
In The Soul-Winning Church, J.A. Medders and Doug Logan Jr. offer a compelling call for churches to embrace their biblical mission of evangelism. Grounded in Scripture and pastoral experience, this book challenges congregations to recover their zeal for reaching the lost and to weave evangelism into the fabric of church life. Rather than presenting evangelism as an optional program or the work of a few extroverted leaders, the authors show that it is a shared responsibility for the entire body of Christ.
Organized around six foundational keysâprayer, posture, preparation, participation, preaching, and discipleshipâthe book guides readers through practical and theological steps to cultivate a culture where gospel proclamation becomes natural and expected. The strength of this book lies in its emphasis on systemic, lasting change rather than quick fixes. The soul-searching questions at the end of each section help readers reflect deeply and move beyond surface-level adjustments.
Medders and Logan confront the temptation to measure success by numbers and programs rather than faithfulness to Christâs mission. They remind us that evangelism is not about filling pews but about glorifying God by making disciples. This book stands out for its pastoral tone and clarity, offering biblical truth with actionable steps for churches of any size or denomination.
Accessible yet convicting, The Soul-Winning Church is an excellent resource for ministry leaders and laypeople alike who long to see their church reflect the heart of Christ for the lost. It is not just a call to action but an invitation to reorient oneâs ministry toward the Great Commission in a sustainable and gospel-centered way.
Another book about evangelism in the local church? Yup.
And itâs fine. Is there anything groundbreaking in here? Nope. Anything that you wonât have heard a million times before if youâre in church ministry? Absolutely not.
But what I did really like about it was both its clarity and its brevity. If you want to lead a church that sees ...people putting their faith in Jesus for the first time then you need to:
- pray for it
- make the consequences of the gospel for the church family clear
- show practical love to your local community
- be engaged in personal evangelism
- preach for conversion
- and be ready for converts
My main takeaways from the book will be the gentle rebuke that we donât specifically pray for a specific number of people to be saved, and thatâs probably because we donât believe it will really happen. I was also prompted to think about what the reputation is of my church in the local community. Is that a help or a hindrance.
At the very end of the book, thereâs a helpful little chart that allows you to rate your church against these six different factors in making your church successful to sharing Jesus meaningfully.
Iâll use this book with my church leaders at some point. In ten years time will I still pick it up? Probably not. But right now, itâs a decent enough book about being an evangelistic church and thatâs good enough.
This book has six chapters that go in depth to the needed six areas needed for a soul winning church. The six areas are;
1. Praying for Conversions
2. Posture of an Evangelistic Church
3. Preparing for Conversions
4. Personal Evangelism
5. Preaching for Conversions
6. Process for New Converts
The authors explain why all six of these are needed not just one or two in order to be a âsoul-winning church.â They also put into perspective why the church should care about being a soul-winning church in a missional mode instead of in a maintenance mode.
There are personal ...stories that are shared as well that remind the reader that we do not always experience seeing somebody come to faith because of our evangelism but that should not stop us from sharing the Gospel. I was glad they pointed this out since my own background in learning how to evangelize this was something hit home on. God is at work already in peoples lives and we may have the opportunity to water where God is already at work but each person and story looks different so there is no failure in not seeing a person come to Christ when you speak to them. We can continue to pray for people we meet and speak with and that is just as important. God changes hearts not us.
This book is great for Church leaders to help with vision castings and perspective on evangelism. This book can help you ensuring that your church body is equipped and the culture is one towards prayer and evangelism while ensuring that new believers would be ready to be engaged and even before that, that anybody would feel welcome in the church space and would hear the Gospel preached.
