Starting over is hard! But it’s a lesson nine-year-old Abigail is learning as she begins fourth grade at her new school. She’s also going to learn about grace—the kind we extend to others and the grace God offers his children. Fun, relatable, grounded in Scripture, and full of bold illustrations, Abigail and the Big Start Over by Bethany McIlrath is a story kids will love.

Amanda Cleary Eastep Author, Tree Street Kids series

While plenty of books for kids this age have ‘good guys’ and ‘bad guys,’ Bethany McIlrath has crafted real-world characters in real-life settings who exhibit both vice and virtue and desperately need God’s grace for a fresh start. Honestly, that was my favorite trait of this book—how all the characters demonstrate their need for grace, from Abigail to her new friend Flora, to their irritating classmate Greg, to Abigail’s mom. This engaging book will help kids honor others, seek to understand others, extend grace to others, and grow in grace themselves.

Caroline Saunders Author, The Story of Water and The Story of Home

Delightful. Relatable. Entertaining. Accessible. True. Meeting Abigail in these pages felt like discovering a friend for the fifth-grade ‘new girl’ inside of me, who was desperately lonely and felt like she was blowing it at every turn. I am so eager to introduce Abigail and the Big Start Over to all of my elementary-aged friends so that they too can adventure with her, identify with her, and discover the incredibly beautiful and immensely applicable power of the gospel in their own very real lives, right alongside her. These stories about Abigail will doubtless impact the stories of their readers in a powerful way.

Customer Reviews

4.00 stars Great for ages 8-12

(Review written for 'Abigail and the Big Start Over')

I purchased the Abigail series, to tutor Abigail, my pastors granddaughter, over the summer. The main character name and the smart yet sensitive plot did the trick!

We're so glad to hear that these books worked well for tutoring! Thank you so much for sharing your review.

5.00 stars Great for my 9 year old

(Review written for 'Abigail and the Big Start Over')

My daughter (also named Abigail) just finished 3rd grade and is a bit of a reluctant reader but she has really enjoyed this book. She doesn't typically pick up chapter books on her own without some encouragement so the fact that she chose to read this book means she highly recommends it! In a world full of terrible books coming out lately it is so refreshing to have a great Christian option to encourage her walk with Christ.

What an encouragement! We're so glad to hear that your daughter has enjoyed it and been encouraged.

5.00 stars My 8 year old LOVED IT!

(Review written for 'Abigail and the Big Start Over')

My daughter read books 1 and 2 we are getting her the rest soon. I haven’t read myself but my daughter loved them! She even gifted her gently used book #1 to a friend that she knew would be blessed by it. They are currently starting at a new school this coming fall and my girl knew that Abigail and the Big Start Over: Switch Schools. Make Friends. Fix All the Mess! would be perfect for her. I’m so glad there are books like this available and interesting enough for kiddos to enjoy.

We're so glad to hear that your daughter is enjoying this series and able to encourage a friend! Thanks so much for sharing, Evie!
