I love this small group study guide series from The Good Book Company. Christians are regularly told they should spend more time studying God’s Word, but sometimes there’s not a clear plan for how to do this. These study guides provide practical, step-by-step guidance on working through books of the Bible, along with wonderful questions that encourage reflection and application. I hope churches and Christian ministries will take advantage of this wonderful resource.
The aim of the The Good Book Company is to be biblical, relevant and accessible, and nothing embodies that ethos more than their Good Book Guides. Each guide provides a framework for your group to dig into the text of Scripture for itself while providing enough of a steer to keep you on track plus useful pointers towards application. The result is a great combination of fidelity to Scripture and ease of use.
The Good Book Guides are an immensely precious resource for the church. A careful blend of helpful context and clearly-worded, searching questions which aim to help readers to uncover the meaning of the text and apply it in responsible ways. I think these small group studies are the best available and pray that they will continue to prove helpful to local churches across the world!
I was sorry this book could not be sent from a NZ shop/warehouse, but the book arrived promptly and was tracked by Australia Post. I was using an older copy of the study guide for Luke 1 - 12, and was sorry to see that the quality of the paper and printing has declined when I ordered Luke 12 - 24. However it is very good value for money. The Bible study group I lead has been blessed by the studies. We find that most weeks the studies are on the long side for our purposes and so have taken about 12 or 13 weeks to do 8 studies, but no one is complaining.
This is a verse-by-verse study on the second half of the gospel of Luke. Each of the 7 sessions has the following format as well as a dictionary for some of the key words.
Talkabout: ice breaker for groups or getting your thoughts going if doing alone
Investigate: explore the passage
Apply: practical questions
Explore more: go deeper
Getting Personal: personal reflection
Pray: prayer
There’s a leader’s guide in the second half of the book to facilitate group discussions. There’s also a map at the beginning as well as some context for why to study the gospel of Luke.
This is a clear and concise study guide. It offers very little commentary or context, but can be used as a companion to the commentary “Luke 12-24 for You”. I do appreciate the separation of these as I can tend to focus more easily on the commentary than the actual verses when they are together. This study allows me to wrestle with Scripture on my own before immediately turning to a commentary. I think this approach helps me to actually learn better than reading the verses with the commentary before approaching the questions.
I enjoy the simplicity to the study guide with how each session is laid out. It can easily be done on its own for individual study, but is also set up to be great for groups. The leader’s guide in the back equips even the most inexperienced leader to do well. These are targeted for adults, but I am even thinking about using them in our homeschooling in our preteen/teen years with the kids.
I received a complimentary copy as a reviewer and all opinions shared are my own.
Helpful comments on each passage with apt and non judgemental questions.
However too much in each session. At least 90 minutes needed for each
There's so much about this study to enjoy. We especially loved the way it helped us to see the connections between different incidents in the gospel, and also to explore the Old Testament background. We found it really exciting! Only 4 stars though because we found each study just covered too much ground to be satisfactory. Our sessions allow an hour for study 30 minutes for catch up and prayer, and after the first couple of studies we gave up trying to cram everything in and split the rest in half. There was plenty of material in half a study to fill the time. Maybe it was partly being on Zoom as well but we were getting frustrated with having to skim so quickly. With that adjustment, we have really enjoyed it.
