Our family has loved the Do Great Things for God series for awhile now, but in an all-boy household, I was patiently anticipating some male-focused stories alongside the wonderful biographies of women. And now they are here!
This book shares an overview of Lewis’ life—a boy full of curiosity who loved stories and wasn’t afraid to ask hard questions. His journey shows children that seeking truth, wrestling with doubts, and exercising imagination are not weaknesses, but ways that God can shape a life for His purposes.
This book does omit any mention of his brother, Warnie - a large influence if you’ve read other books about Lewis, but it does include Tolkien, which is always a fun nod.
Of course, we know that God went on to use C.S. Lewis in an extraordinary way—writing books that continue to point millions to Jesus.
As with the other books in the series, the illustrations are engaging and the stories are short enough for little ones. It’s a beautiful way to help kids see how God delights to use ordinary people for extraordinary purposes. Highly recommend adding this one to your family library!
*I received a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Our family is a huge fan of C.S. Lewis' works. So finding this picture book Biography was a real treat. The illustrations capture children's attention. Paired with just the right amount of text to keep the story moving and engaging for kids, but showcasing C.S. Lewis life in a meaningful way.
I was so excited to see this new release about C.S. Lewis, a beloved author & theologian. We love reading these as a family with our toddlers and elementary kids! The stories are straightforward and simple, preserving accurate details about the lives of the men while not bogging down the story for little listeners. These books are great for family enjoyment or for independent reading by early readers.
A big thank you to the publisher for the complimentary copy!
I received C.S. Lewis compliments of The Good Book Company in exchange for my honest review.
C.S. Lewis: The Boy Who Loved to Ask Big Questions is one of the latest titles in the Do Great Things for God series, and one of the first featuring a male. This book teaches readers about the life and legacy of Clive Staples, often referred to as Jack, who is famous for his beloved The Chronicles of Narnia books. I devoured the Narnia series as a teen and haven't yet read anything else from Lewis. I didn't know much about him, so although this book is for kids, I enjoyed what I learned by reading it.
Using rich illustrations, C.S. Lewis takes children through Lewis' childhood through his interesting testimony—he was saved on a motorcycle on the way to the zoo! His testimony was especially encouraging to me because it demonstrates how God can use ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things. Knowing that he authored Mere Christianity, I'd always assumed he was a theologian. It was fascinating to learn that he was simply faithful to the Lord with the circumstances he'd been given. If you've enjoyed reading any of Lewis' works and/or are wanting to learn more about him, I highly recommend also reading this book!
I was so glad to finally have some Christian men highlighted in the Do Great Things for God series.
I recently started journeying through the Narnia books with my little one, so she was amazed to learn about the life of C.S. Lewis, or Jack as he preferred to be called, and I loved seeing her excitement to learn about him.
This book shares his childhood, the hardships of losing his mother at a young age, and the wartime challenges of his day before he went to Oxford and became the renowned author and thinker many love and admire today. I love how informational yet still digestible this book and series are for young minds. We really enjoyed it!
I highly recommend it and think it would be a great resource for a homeschool lesson to teach your children about key figures in Christian history. Another great book in this series.
I received a complimentary copy as a reviewer, and all opinions shared are my own.
This is a great series to learn more about prominent Christian people. This book specifically dives into the life of C.S. Lewis aka Jack in a way that is accessible for young children and can inspire them to ask big questions.
At the end of the book there are questions to think about which can help your child really think about the story and some of the questions asked such as is God real. There is also a timeline of the life C.S. Lewis and a world map with spots C.S. Lewis was. Finally there is a QR code where you can download further resources to help think about the story further.
The illustrations in this book are fantastic! This book serves as a great introduction to C.S. Lewis for young readers - I can’t recommend it enough!
From the very first page, Laura Wickham’s storytelling and Keila Elm’s vibrant illustrations brought young “Jack” to life—his inquisitive nature, his love for stories, and his deep curiosity reminded us why his work has captivated generations. We followed Jack as he wrestled with questions like “Is God even real?” and “Why does God let bad things happen?” and we appreciated how softly and simply the answers unfolded through his journey of faith
The illustrations are utterly charming—with playful, colorful art and a fun “seek-and-find” mouse that appears on many pages. Plus, the extra touches at the back—like a timeline, map, discussion questions, and downloadable worksheets—made our reading time interactive and meaningful.
It felt like more than a biography; it was an invitation into thinking, exploring, and believing together. 🤍
This is an abridged version of my original review, which is available at https://www.lifeisstory.com/reviews/c-s-lewis-the-boy-who-loved-to-ask-big-questions-laura-caputo-wickham-and-keila-elm/
This delightful picture book biography introduces kids to C. S. Lewis, with simple text from Laura Caputo-Wickham and bright, colorful illustrations from Keila Elm. The story covers Lewis's childhood and some key moments from his adult life, concluding with his creation of The Chronicles of Narnia. Even though the story involves lots of transitions in time, the narrative flows smoothly and never feels choppy. The author also ties everything together with the theme of how Lewis asked lots of big questions throughout his life, found answers in the Bible, and wanted to share these truths with others through his writing and speaking.
I have read multiple picture book biographies of C. S. Lewis, and I like how each one is different. This one is especially great for little kids. It touches on some heavy topics from Lewis's life, such as his mother's terminal illness and his service in World War One, but these parts of the book go by quickly, without much emphasis on them. The story is age-appropriate and engaging, and there's also a little seek-and-find element, since the same mouse appears in many of the illustrations. This book also includes helpful material at the back for digging deeper.
This book introduces kids to an author who generations of people have loved and admired. It is age-appropriate as a read-aloud for very young children, and it is a great fit for independent readers. I recommend this to families, churches, and Christian schools, and would encourage C. S. Lewis fans who enjoy this book to explore the rest of the Do Great Things for God series as well.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
We have loved this whole series! J really love having a male figure to show my kids, too! As a book loving kid- my son love C.S. Lewis work- I think this book helps my kids see who he was!
This biography is going to captivate all ages as you learn about the incredible life of C.S. Lewis (he preferred to be called Jack). Beautifully written and illustrated, you’ll discover Jack’s journey to Narnia.
Jack loved to ask questions! His miserable boarding school and the horrors of World War One made him ask: “Is God even real?” What a big question for a kid’s book! And I appreciate that it is handled so simply and concisely- he read the Bible, and “the more he read, the more it all made sense.”
Now that Jack had found the answers to his questions, he wanted to help others with their questions! And he continues to do that today, through the legacy of his books.
There is so much you could talk about in a biography about one of the most influential authors of all time, and I think Caputo-Wickham did a wonderful job choosing moments in Jack’s life that defined him. The illustrations are so adorable- I love the little mouse that is always with Jack (even in war).
As a C.S. Lewis fan, I could not be happier with this book! It is a treasure and a lovely tribute to Lewis’s life. The “Questions to Think About” will have you and your little ones asking big questions like Jack (wouldn’t he love that!)!
