Foster carers
One of the bigger stories of this week was the report that a Christian couple had been banned from becoming foster carers; as it turned out the ruling wasn't quite as straightforward as that. John Richardson wrote this piece for The Times which helpfully takes us through the issues and points out the concerns we should still have for Christian freedom of belief.

John Dickson on the Third Way
John Dickson has written a thought-provoking piece on the place of homosexuality and religion in today's society and, in particular, the possiblity of a third way, where you can be neither pro-gay or a religious bigot.

Parachurch
The latest 9Marks ejournal is out now. This edition is on the relationship between church and parachurch (roughly defined as organisations that work outside the traditional church in social welfare or evangelism). Are they a good thing? Useful thoughts in these articles.

Don Carson raps!
Last week we linked to The Voice rapping the Heidleburg Catechism. Well, this week, he's gone one step further and managed to record a rap about the Westminster Catechism featuring Don Carson.

Know anyone going to Bible college?
Kevin DeYoung has a few useful questions to ask guys considering college or seminary. Can we suggest you take a moment to forward these helpful reflections on to anyone you know considering this path?

And finally, our thoughts are with Greg Cushing, the Cambridge scrum-half who we blogged on yesterday. We understand that the score was rather one-sided...

New blog on the Old Testament
The chaps over at the Gospel Coalition have launched a new blog called Preaching Christ in the Old Testament. "Whether you preach regularly, lead a small group, or simply want to learn more about the Bible, you’ll find resources here that will unveil the beauty of this story [the OT]." Definitely one to add to the list of "check regularly".

How to give a rubbish sermon
Following up from last week's "How not to do church", London pastor Richard Perkins shows us how not to give a sermon. As he says, it's helpful to know what we're trying to avoid!

Let's go viral?
Sydney Anglicans have a thought-provoking article about using viral internet videos for evangelism - using a Portugese video about the Nativity as an example.

Rapping the catechism
A bit old now (as we measure time on the interweb), but Curt "Voice" Allen wins his bet with Kevin DeYoung that he couldn't rap on DeYoung's book about the Heidelburg Catechism. Even if you're not into rap (or catechisms!), give this a listen. Lyrics here.

50 Fruits of Pride
An outstanding and sobering list from Jeff Keeney, taking the issue of pride and showing how it can work itself out in everyday things. Worth taking the time to think, meditate and then pray through this very deceitful of sins.

Most influential books
US Pastor, Kevin DeYoung, has surveyed the readers of his blog about which Christian books have been the most influential in their life. A good list to take one at a time. I wonder whether a UK-based list might be different?

Is God a vengeful, arbitary, mean-spirited god?
How do you answer people who focus on God's apparent genocidal tendencies in the Old Testament? US pastor Tremper Longman III puts these stories in the context of the whole bible in this short video.

KJV = 400
The King James Version of the Bible is 400 years this year, as you may well have seen in the media. All Souls worker Mark Meynell reflects on this and how it's being portrayed in the media.

How the Bible fits together
You might have seen it before, but here it is again; Paul Wilkinson's visualisation of the cross references in the Bible. Chapter length across X axis (no prizes for guessing where Psalm 119 is!).

All about "Assuming"
Kevin DeYoung of the Gospel Coalition gives his view about the new NIV translation of 1 Tim 2:12 (which is "assume authority", rather than the 1984 version's "have authority". If you're interested in the finer points of translations or this debate in particular, it's a good article and well-worth taking the time to read.

What are the essential things to include in a funeral service? It's one of those things that we'll all have experience of sooner or later. Brian Croft of the blog, Practical Shepherding, offers 4 things which should be included in every funeral service.

Is Christianity Biased Toward Book Lovers?
3 and a half minutes of John Piper answering this question. As book publishers, we guess it's a pretty important thing to be reading! But what about those non-booky people? Isn't God's revelation to us in the Bible unfair to them?

7 Counterfeits of Repentance
Mark Driscoll gives us seven things which are NOT repentance. Pretty interesting read. It's often illuminating to define something in the negative like this. Helps to define the boundaries. Number seven is one I'm too familiar with personally I fear...
